A data center power cord enquiry should start with the equipment reference and the complete connection requirement. Before requesting a replacement or custom assembly, collect the evidence needed for an equipment-specific review. This procurement checklist does not provide electrical installation design or establish an approved BGS data center product range.
Identify both ends and the equipment
Record the equipment and power-distribution references, the mating connector designations and the intended country of use. Include clear photographs or manufacturer part numbers where available. IEC 60320-1 sets general requirements for appliance couplers in its defined scope. A reference to that standard does not by itself establish that an offered cord assembly is approved for your equipment or location.
Resolve a data center power cord substitution before ordering
A connector name alone does not define an acceptable replacement. Start with the equipment-approved assembly and record every proposed difference. Procurement can collect the evidence; the responsible engineer decides whether the replacement is suitable.
| Difference to review | Evidence to request | Release condition |
|---|---|---|
| Mating end, orientation or retention | Exact connector references, drawings and equipment compatibility information | Engineering accepts the complete connection arrangement |
| Cable construction, rating or length | Offered assembly datasheet, markings and applicable approval references | Requirements match the intended application and destination |
| Manufacturer or assembly reference | Traceable production-intent sample and controlled assembly record | Written approval identifies the exact version to be supplied |
For example, an offered cord may have familiar-looking ends but a different retention arrangement. Keep that substitution open until the equipment owner has reviewed it. Use the power cord documentation guide to check the evidence behind the offered assembly. Submit the equipment reference, both connector references, quantity and destination for a sourcing review.

A data center power cord substitution example
Suppose an OEM requests a replacement cord for an installed equipment model. The offered cable has the expected connector designations, but one end uses a different retention feature. Keep the offer open. Ask for the exact offered references and a production-intent sample, then send the difference to the equipment owner. Procurement can compare cost and availability once the engineer has accepted the connection arrangement. Record that decision against the assembly reference; a photograph of similar ends is insufficient.
Can a matching connector designation establish compatibility?
It identifies an interface, but the complete assembly still needs review for ratings, construction, orientation, retention and the intended equipment. Obtain the responsible engineer’s acceptance before treating it as a replacement.
Download the cable evidence register (CSV). Replace the prompts with your agreed requirements and keep the completed file with the order record.
Prepare a comparable RFQ
- Equipment or approved assembly reference and the required quantity.
- Connector designation at each end, orientation and any retention feature.
- Required cable length and permitted length tolerance.
- Electrical ratings and environmental requirements for engineering confirmation.
- Identification, colour coding, packaging and traceability requirements.
- Destination documentation and any customer-specific approval process.
Review substitutions explicitly
Ask the supplier to identify any difference from the requested reference. Route electrical compatibility and rating decisions to the responsible engineer. Do not accept visual similarity as approval. Keep the reviewed assembly definition with the purchase order so a later repeat order has the same reference.
Agree the sample and record pack
List the documents needed before a sample can be accepted. Record the sample identity, manufacturer, declared construction and any unresolved points. Decide who approves the sample and what changes trigger another review. Define the identification expected on each delivery and how discrepancies will be handled.
Where BGS can assist
BGS can review a sourcing enquiry through selected manufacturers. Product availability, manufacturer capability, suitability and applicable evidence must be confirmed for the specific requirement. See Power Cords & Assemblies, Wires & Cables and Electrical & Energy.
